If y'all follow along on Instagram, you've probably already heard this story BUT just in case you're missing out on my incredibly awesome life, here ya go! This is a cautionary tale, about being careful what you pray for. Humility, in particular.
Today, work was CrAzY. Everyone needed something, and they needed it right now. #lifeofanadmin. For the record, this is not a complaint, I love being busy at work. However, you've heard haste makes waste? Yeah. Well, I guess they say that for a reason. So, the story. I have to ship a box of 100 bottles by 3pm. It's now 2:40, and I had just boxed them all up perfectly. They're in perfect little rows. In a perfectly square cardboard box. Perfectly ready to be taped up. The only hitch was...the tape was in the other room. To save time, I picked up the box and carried it into the hallway. Slowly, and yet, so very quickly that I could not stop it...the box slipped from my hands. Bottles. Rolled. Everywhere. In a slow motion scene like a movie, I look up to find my boss in the meeting room directly across from me, as everything I'm holding clatters to the floor. Let's just say it was...awkward. And dare I say, humiliating.
And yet, the saint for today, Saint Anthony(not the guy who finds all the things, but the one known as father of the monks,) lived for humility. He knew that we were not made for this world. At age 18. he heard the reading at Mass about leaving all you have to follow the Lord. And let me tell you, he did not do this thing halfway. He left everything behind to live in the desert the rest of his life. That's kind of a big deal y'all.
St. Anthony was known to say to his fellow monks, "For our life is by nature uncertain and is daily meted out to us by Providence. If we are convinced of this and live each day as the apostle suggests, then we will not fall into sin; no desire will enslave us, no anger move us, no treasure bind us to earth; we will await death with unfettered hearts." Unfettered hearts. I want one of those. If the only way God can get through to me is to have me randomly throw stuff across the floor in front of my boss...maybe next time I'll make it 200 bottles.
